Saturday night hockey at iceSheffield saw the league champions pay their final visit of the season.
Zimozdra and Walker started between the pipes. Leeds showed initial dominance in the opening period. With three goals (Witkowski 2 and Barron) in the bag by 16:10 they looked comfortable. The Steeldogs had threatened little until Spurr broke the seal on the goal late on. End of the first 1-3
The Steeldogs worked hard at the start of the second period. Walker was kept on his toes and the Dogs looked like they had a spring in their step. Vulkanovs scored a fine goal, skating free of the Knights and finding a spot behind Walker. After the goal the Knights stepped up their intensity but the Steeldogs defended resolutely. Sheffield made a successful breakout of their zone and Vulkanovs scored the equalising goal. Now with momentum the Steeldogs went straight back down and did it again! Vulkanovs with his hat-trick with Walker well beaten. The Dogs held their lead briefly as Haywood scored a fourth for the Knights.
Quite the middle period for the Dogs! 4-4
The Knights didn’t waste time in getting the game winning goal – 7 seconds in. Brown with the decisive goal. From there on in the Dogs kept battling, creating chances and fighting for the puck. The game was competitive right to the final buzzer. End to end action thriller the fans inside the rink tonight and the Steeldogs got a great reception as they left the ice.
