Seahawks 5 – Steeldogs 4

Steeldogs were looking to make it two wins out of two in the post Tremblay era as they made the short trip to Hull. Warburton kept his place between the pipes.

A fairly even start to the game saw both netminders in good form. Hull took the lead in the 8th minute through Svec after an unfortunate slip by a defender. They looked to add to their tally but just as the 1st break loomed, Walker Sommer found a way past Zimozdra with 6 seconds left, a powerplay goal after good work from Bjorkly Nordstrom and Hallfors.

The 2nd period started with a huge centre ice hit by former Dogs favourite, Lee Bonner, which earned him 5 minutes in the box for charging. Unfortunately, Phillips took no further part in the game following the hit.

The Steeldogs made Hull pay for it with 2 powerplay markers during the long advantage. Bjorkly Nordstrom with a goal and an assist, Ripley the other scorer, Sommer getting assists on both goals. However, the Dogs ran into penalty trouble of their own, with D pairing Barry and Turner both penalised during the same shift, handing Hull a full 2 minutes of 5 on 3. Corneil (5 on 3) and then Chamberlain (5 on 4) finding a way past Warburton.

The home team were certainly on the front foot now and it took some great defending by the Steeldogs to get to the 2nd break tied at 3 all.

A 3rd period with all to play for. Sommer’s speed on the break was proving too much for hull and he got his 4th point of the night, burying the puck past Zimozdra at 51.44 assisted Doxey and Morgan. This prompted another heavy spell of Hull pressure. Hallfors spectacularly preventing a near certain goal by diving full length in front of one goal bound effort. Unfortunately Hulls top line clicked into gear which led to an equaliser from Sobchak with 5 minutes left. A fantastic game of hockey deserved to go into the extra period of 3 on 3, but Barry took his 3rd penalty of the night, a roughing call with just under 3 minutes left. Hull only needed 20 seconds to get what would prove to be the game winner. That man Sobchak tapping in at the back post. Despite opting for the extra skater, the Dogs couldn’t get the goal and the point they deserved. With Hulls obvious firepower, we must keep penalties to an absolute minimum.

Sam Cooper took the Steeldogs man of the match award.

Up next, a double header against Leeds.
