On the night Alex Graham’s jersey was retired, the Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs paid their respects to their team mate and went out to play in his honour.
During the first period, both teams took a little while to find their feet and get going. The visitors had the better of the chances until 15:41 when Jonathan Phillips scored a power play goal against the run of play. It took MK only 16 seconds to equalise through Rutkis. Sheffield were outshot 15 to 7 but went into the break level.
MK Lightning started the second period with purpose and put themselves into the lead on a well taken chance from Herrman. The challenge got harder for the Dogs at 34:00 when Vulkanovs was given a 5+ game for slew footing. Despite the 5 minute advantage, MK only added one goal, Field registering MK’s 3rd. The Dogs worked hard to prevent further scoring during the major penalty. End of the period 1-3
Sheffield came out with the bit between their teeth for the third. With Bissonnette beating Kerlin with a backhand shot from close range, they were within one goal and competed hard. There were chances at both ends and Sheffield levelled through Bissonnette with his second of the night. The game was tight going into the final 2 minutes. MK seized their chance through Rutkis on a great feed from Wallace. At 3-4 The Steeldogs took their timeout, once play resumed with the Dogs in possession, Zimozdra skated to the bench, giving Sheffield the extra attacker. Sadly, it was not to be for the home team as Venus added the empty net goal.
